Aphrodite Waffles & Gelato
106 Desker Road, Singapore 209628
Opening Hours: 1pm – 10:30pm (Mon, Wed, Thurs), 1pm – 2am (Fri – Sun), Closed Tues

Aphrodite Waffles & Gelato is located near the popular Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant 瑞春点心餐厅.

Focusing on their unique gelato flavours (Single $5, Double $9) made in-house, 12 different flavours are available at any one time.

Interesting flavours include Thyme, Blood Orange Sorbet, Salted Honey, Goat Cheese and Aphrodite (Blue Cheese Chocolate).

Serving both Original ($6) and Charcoal waffles ($7) on the menu, the latter was unfortunately not available at the time of visit.

With a taller and thicker look, the waffle was crispy on the outside with a nice golden brown hue.

On the inside, it was light and airy with an aromatic vanilla scent that has a good contrast in textures.

Apiary – Prinsep
128 Prinsep Street, Singapore 188655
Opening Hours: 12pm – 9pm (Tues – Sat), Closed Sun, Mon

Apiary, pronounced as “eh-pee-er-ee”, will not be unfamiliar to ice cream lovers, with their first outlet located just diagonally opposite to Shake Shack at Neil Road.

They have a new pop-up café at Prinsep Street.

Ice cream similarly priced at $4.20 for single scoop, $8 for double scoops and $11 for triple scoops.

While they are rotating, the usual flavours can include Blue Milk (milk, blue pea flower, salt), and Caramelised Strawberry.

Premium flavours (additional $0.50) include Apiary (Honey Ice Cream, Cocoa Nibs), Sicilian Pistachio, 73% Dark Chocolate, Hojicha (roasted Japanese tea), and Lychee & Yuzu Sorbet.

In terms of the waffles, while the classic brown butter waffles ($6) was moderately crispy (can be slightly more), the inside tasted more doughy and fluffy. However, I still enjoyed it for a slight salty butter tinge, which made it different from the usual.

Around – Tampines
The Alps Residences, 115 Tampines Street 86, #01-51, Singapore 528537
Opening Hours: 12pm – 2am (Mon – Sun)

As a stand-alone building at The Alps Residence in Tampines, this is Around’s 2nd outlet, opened shortly after their first outlet in Ang Mo Kio.

With a total of 8 tables indoors, the ice cream cafe offers 16 flavours at any one time, ranging from interesting and outlet exclusive ones such as Yakult Oreo, Peanut Butter & Blueberries and Cereal Milk.

Other classic flavours include Pistachio, Speculoos, Strawberry Cheesecake, Peppermint, Salted Caramel, Durian, Matcha and Nutella.

Their Waffle ($7.90) was the highlight, thick and crispy with a choice of Nutella or maple syrup drizzle. It had a golden-brown hue on the inside with a crispy texture, fluffy and cake-like on the inside.

However, do note that the wait can get a little long (and think that affected their Google rating as well).

The Better Scoop
264 Serangoon Central, #01-203, Singapore 550264
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

Fans of Just Because Creamery in Sembawang will be thrilled to know that the brand has opened a second outlet in Serangoon right beside NEX.

Among the 3 seasonal waffles, the Tie Guan Yin Waffle ($6.50) and Nian Gao Waffle ($6.80) come with a traditional twist.

I enjoyed the Nian Gao Waffles ($6.80) with a layer of Nian Gao, a traditional “Chinese New Year cake”, made from glutinous rice flour embedded within the waffle.

Adding a chewy texture in contrast to the crispy nature of a waffle, it is similar to how we usually pan-fried our Nian Gao with eggs, except in the form of a waffle that is more airy.

78 Yong Siak Street, #01-18, Singapore 163078
Tel: +65 6221 1076
Opening Hours: 12pm – 10pm (Mon – Sun)

Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee originated in Toa Payoh and has expanded with three ice cream cafés operating under the Creamier name — Creamier Toa Payoh, Creamier Gillman Barracks, and Creamier Tiong Bahru.

The Tiong Bahru café is nestled in a pre-war horse-shoe housing block built in 1939 along Yong Siak Street.

One of their must-haves is the freshly baked Golden Waffles with Ice Cream ($9.30 onwards), and recommended flavours are Sea Salt Gula Melaka, Earl Grey Lavender and Roasted Pistachio.

The thick Belgian style waffle is known to be buttery and fragrant, imparted from using market fresh local eggs, fresh cream and pure butter.

Desert Dessert
Blk 163, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, #01-424, Singapore 560163
Opening Hours: 12pm – 11pm (Mon – Thur), 12pm – 1am (Fri – Sun)

The 32 seater-space at Desert Dessert has a MUJI-style layout, decked in wooden benches and white table tops.

Stepping inside, the most eye-catching part of the deco is their colourful stools, that look like scoops of gelato, placed at every table.

Even though there are only 10 Gelato flavours to choose from, which is quite limited for a gelato cafe, the gelatos here are considered vibrant and colourful in terms of appearance.

Flavours range from Classic (Single $3.60/ Double $6.60) Matcha, Coconut, Cookies & Cream, Strawberry, Earl Grey, Butterscotch Caramel and Raspberry to Premium ones (additional $1) such as Chocolate, Sea Salt and Mango Passion.

Drizzled with maple syrup and sprinkled with icing sugar, the waffle is aromatic with vanilla and buttermilk fragrance that most waffle lovers will enjoy.

Foursome Ice Cream & Waffle
22 Sin Ming Road #01-218, Singapore 570022
Opening Hours: 6:30pm – 1am (Mon – Thurs), 12pm – 2am (Sat), 12pm – 1am (Sun)

Located at Upper Thomson under a residential block, Foursome Ice Cream & Waffle has joined the trend of ice cream bars in the vicinity opening past midnight.

14 ice cream flavours are available at any one time, ranging from regular ones such as Gula Melaka, Banana Nut Crunch, Hojicha, Black Sesame, Hokkaido Milk, Chamomile Honey Milk Tea, Mint with Cookie Chips, Mao Shan Wang, Sea Salt Caramel, Dark Chocolate and Tiramisu.

Single scoop is priced at $3.80, while double is $6.60.

Premium flavours are priced at an additional $0.80 (Single scoop $4.60, Double Scoops $8.20), and include Hazelnut Chocolate Rocher, Taro Yam Coconut and Speculoos Biscoff – probably the IT flavour of late.

I enjoyed the Waffle ($4.20) which was crispy with a light crunchy on the outside, complete with golden-brown shade.

The icing sugar and chocolate sauce was added to the sides for additional sweetness, yet without thankfully not interfering with the taste of the waffle.

Fuel X
The Venue Shoppes, 2 Tai Thong Crescent, #01-06, Singapore 347836
Opening Hours: 11am – 9:30pm (Mon, Tue, Thurs, Fri), 10am – 9:30pm (Sat – Sun), Closed Wed

The Fuel family has a new member – Fuel X which has opened at the Potong Pasir area of Singapore.

The Red Velvet Waffle ($16) was the only ‘new’ dessert there with a change in recipe and a whole new outlook.

The dessert arrived with cream cheese sauce in between the two stack red velvet waffles, while the waffle texture was soft and dense – with a more cake-like texture instead of being light and airy.

Also accompanied with baked apple with cinnamon toppings, strawberries, blueberries and crushed pistachio nuts for a more refreshing bite.

My favourite part of this dish was the matcha ice cream, being creamy and robust with an earthly matcha profile and a distinctive bitterness.

Gelatolabo – Mohamed Sultan
18 Mohamed Sultan Road, 01-01, Singapore 238967
Opening Hours: 1pm – 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 12pm – 10:30pm (Fri – Sun)

The gelato shop is known for churning out small batches in interesting flavours, and use only fresh fruits and source for local and organic ingredients where possible.

What you get include rotating flavours like Yamanashi Peach & Lemongrass, Madagascan Vanilla, Fuji Apple Pie & Cinnamon, Sakura Smoke, Artichoke & Pear Compote, Colombian Cold Brew & Cookie Butter Bits, Watermelon, Mint & Chia Seeds, Navel Orange & White Chrysanthemum Flower, Lychee Raspberry & Rose, and Kyoto Shiso & Yuzu Jelly.

This time I had the Fresh Tokyo Mochi Waffles (additional $6.60) which is again not so commonly seen in Singapore.

Made with nippon flour and mochi, this had a delightful crisp and a slight-sticky and soft inside.

While I initially thought this could have been pretty filling, it was overall not too dense or thick, and paired well with the lightly-flavoured gelato.

Glacier
161 Lavender St, #01-09, Singapore 338750
Opening Hours: 9:30am – 10pm (Sun – Thurs), 9:30am – 1am (Fri – Sat)

Opened by the folks behind Onalu – a bagel house located at SMU, Glacier is their new concept cafe with a botanical theme, offering an-almost ‘farm-to-table’ concept.

12 Gelato flavours (Single $4, Double $7.50, Premium +$1) are available, mostly with herbs and botanical flavours.

Other flavours include Smoked Milk, Black Sesame, Milk & Honey, Sicilian Pistachio, 85% Dark Chocolate and Shizuoka Genmaicha.

I enjoyed the Blue Pea Lemongrass Pandan, smooth, creamy and refreshing with distinctive lemongrass taste that is similar to the Thai-inspired Butterfly Pea drink.

Here the highlight is the Pandan Mochi Waffle ($8) with a sticky mochi layer in addition to the crispy-ness and fluffiness.

Topped with desiccated coconut for the added crunch and aroma, drizzled with maple syrup and Gula Melaka sauce on the side, the overall taste is similar to that of Ondeh Ondeh, the mini green, round glutinous rice balls.

Hay Gelato
136 Bedok North Ave 3, #01-148, Singapore 460136
Opening Hours: 1pm – 2am (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon

By the folks behind Brine Restaurant at North Bridge Road is their new 18-seaters (10 indoors, 8 outdoors) gelato cafe at Bedok.

A single scoop of gelato is priced at $4.20 whereas premium flavours will cost an additional $1 and waffles at $5.50.

A total of 12 flavours will be available at any one time, with interesting flavours such as Balsamic Strawberry, Truffle, Meyer Lemon, Yuzu Ginger and Smoked Hay.

I was looking forward to their Waffle ($5.50) as the service crew interestingly poured the batter into a vertical standing waffle maker instead of a usual waffle pan.

Even though the waffle turned out to be golden brown and crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, though it could be a tad salty which interfered with the gelato flavours.

Holy Cow Creamery – Lavender
465 North Bridge Road, #01-5051, Singapore 191465
Opening Hours: 11:30am – 10pm (Sun – Thurs), 11:30am – 11pm (Fri – Sat)

Holy Cow Creamery has a relatively new outlet 465 North Bridge Road – near Lavender and of short walking distance from the famous Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodles at Crawford Lane and old-school kopitiam Heap Seng Leong.

This is not a typical place you would find a hipster ice cream café, as the shop is surrounded by a mish-mash of nostalgic shops, provisions stores, baking central kitchens, and employment agencies.

Holy Cow Creamery offers a rotating selection of more than 40 flavours of ice cream all churned in their kitchen.

Popular flavours include Mao Shan Wang, Earl Grey Lavender, Ondeh Ondeh, Salted Gula Melaka, Sour Plum Sorbet, Blue Hawaii, and Honeycomb, while we also have more unique flavours like Movie Night (popcorn gelato), Muah Chee and Rojak.

Two styles of waffles are available here: Golden Waffle with maple syrup ($4.50), and Charcoal Waffle with homemade salted caramel sauce ($6.00).

If you order with the Golden Waffle with a single scoop (classic flavour), it works out to be $8 which is pretty inexpensive.

Their waffle has a good balance of being crisp on the outside and fluffy inside – without being too chewy or cake like.

Inside Scoop
779 North Bridge Road, Singapore 198747
Opening Hours: 12:30pm – 10:30pm (Sun – Thurs), 12:30pm – 11pm (Fri – Sat)

If you an ice cream lover in Malaysia, you may have noticed this shop with its colourful look and localised flavours.

From Malaysia to Singapore, Inside Scoop has opened its first international outpost at North Bridge Road.

Prices start from $4.80 for a single scoop of ice cream, $8.30 for double scoops, $11.50 for triple scoops and additional $1 for premium flavours and $2 for double premium flavours.

Out of the 18 flavours on display, only the Mao Shan Wang and Sicilian Pistachio are double premium flavours (+$2), whereas premium flavours (+$1) include D24 Durian, Cempedak, Valrhona Chocolate, Hazelnut, Premium Matcha, Lotus Biscoff Cheesecake, Oreo Nutella Cheesecake and Vanilla Bean.

2 types of waffles are available: Signature Buttermilk (+$7) and Charcoal (+$6).

Appearance-wise, it was quite presentable with icing sugar sprinkled over, salted caramel sauce drizzled on the side and decorated with ice cream waffle cone.

The Charcoal waffle had a texture crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and slightly denser than the usual airy texture.

La Creamery
55 Chai Chee Drive, #01-192, Singapore 460055
Opening Hours: 1pm – 10pm (Sun – Wed), 1pm – 12am (Thu – Sat)

La Creamery may look like a normal neighbourhood ice cream shop, with a simple white and baby pink 22-seaters space that is not deemed as “instagrammable” in today’s terms.

There are actually many items on the menu that seemed interesting and looked promising.

These include their Pu-Erh Waffles ($5), Honey Thyme Cone ($1), Ice Cream flavours (Single $3.80, Double $7, Triple $10, Premium +$1) – Lemongrass Ginger, Osmanthus Jasmine and White Chrysanthemum.

These botanical-flavoured waffles, cones and ice cream are made in-house in small batches, with rotating flavours every 3 weeks.

Infusing Pu-Erh, a Chinese Tea that originates from Yunnan, China, into the waffle batter, the Pu-Erh Waffles ($5) is crispy on the outside with a more chewy texture on the inside.

The thick-cut waffles had an obvious tea taste and aroma in every bite, flavourful on its own. La Creamery (Chai Chee Drive)

Pints & Cones
304 Serangoon Avenue 2 #01-02, Singapore 550304
Opening Hours: 1pm – 11pm (Mon – Sun)

Pints & Cones at Serangoon pairs handcrafted gelato with craft beer offerings. They offer a series of classic gelato flavours such as Tiramisu, Roasted Pistachio, Mango Passionfruit and Rocher.

The black horse which stole the limelight turned out to be their Signature Waffles ($4.50) which had thyme herbs mixed into the waffle batter to produce occasional earthy notes with each bite.

Their texture of their waffles was also on-point – not too dense within and came with light crispy exterior.

I don’t usually eat a lot of waffles, but I ended up finishing most of it unknowingly.

Sweet Cheeks Gelato – Jalan Besar
147 Tyrwhitt Road, Singapore 207561
Opening Hours: 12pm – 11pm (Sun – Thurs), 12pm – 1am (Fri – Sat)

Sweet Cheeks Gelato first started in 2019 at Potong Pasir by 3 SMU graduates together with an Italy-trained chef handcrafting fresh gelato daily.

To be better in the art of gelato-making, their co-founder travelled to Bologna, Italy to train for a month. This is their 3rd outlet – the first two at Potong Pasir and Ang Mo Kio.

18 gelato flavours are available at any one time, priced at $4 for single scoop, $7.50 for double scoops, additional $1 for premium flavour and additional $2 for gourmet flavours.

Gelato flavours were inspired by their co-founder’s overseas travels. For example, Ricotta with Pistachio & Lemoncurd with Speculoos by travels to Italy, Cinnamon Brown Bread from the streets of Ireland and Coconut Mango, and Mango Sticky rice in Thailand.

The waffle here was well executed and fragrant, being light and airy on the inside and with a nice, golden-brown crispy edge on the surface.

Three’s A Crowd
50 Race Course Road, Singapore 218562
Opening Hours: 12pm – 11pm (Mon – Sun)

Halal-certified ice cream cafe Three’s A Crowd, has opened a new outlet at Little India. I was surprised when the Ondeh Waffles ($9) came with desiccated coconut drenched in Gula Melaka sauce (that looked like chye poh aka preserved sweet-salty radish).

This is to replicate the original ondeh ondeh infused with pandan juice, filled with Gula Melaka (palm sugar) and grated coconut.

The Ondeh Waffles had a fragrant aroma with crispy edges and moist texture.

Waffle lovers who prefer an airy texture may find their version too “soggy” due to the sauce drizzled over.

The Coconut ice cream complemented well with the waffles to bring out the ‘feel’ of the local dessert.

Up in Smoke
NeWest, 1 West Coast Drive, #01-67, Singapore 128020
Opening Hours: 9am – 11pm (Mon – Sun)

Up In Smoke is opened by sister cafe Burnt Cones at Sunset Way, another popular hangout place in the west for cafe hoppers recently, populated by gelato shops including Dawn’s Gelateria and Hundred Acre Creamery.

As their name implies, Up in Smoke focuses on smoked items on their menu, namely the Smoked Buttermilk Waffle ($10) and their Scamorza (Smoked cheese) gelato.

Hmm, from the name and the $10 price tag, the Smoked Buttermilk Waffle does burn a hole in the wallet (pun intended).

The Buttermilk waffle is first smoked in sandalwood before trapping the smoke with a glass jar before serving.

With a fragrant and smokey aroma, the smoked buttermilk waffle had a savoury, almost bacon-like taste to it, adding some complexity to the usual dessert.

Waffle Place
50 Bussorah Street, Singapore 199466
Opening Hours: 12pm – 4pm, 5pm – 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 12pm – 4pm, 5pm – 11pm (Fri – Sun)

Waffle Place is “another place” opened by the folks behind Pancake Place at Kandahar Street near Bugis and popular Muslim-owned cafe Royz et Vous (with outlets at Telok Ayer and Sultan Gate).

Being a waffle-centric cafe, their menu includes both Sweet and Savoury Waffles ($13.90 – $20.90) and Croffles ($11.90), a mix between croissant and waffle.

Their dessert waffle menu each comes with a soft serve on top of the waffles with various toppings, with flavours such as Apple Crumble ($14.90), Rocky Road ($14.90), Mango Tango ($15.90), Banana Split ($14.90) and Ondeh-Ondeh ($12.90).

I had the Ondeh-Ondeh Waffle ($12.90) which also comes in Glass Cup ($6.90) and Cone ($5.90), topped with pandan custard cream, Gula Melaka jelly and sprinkled with toasted desiccated coconut with gula Melaka syrup served on the side.

I enjoyed the crispy waffle on the outside with an airy texture on the inside, a contrast to the smooth and creamy vanilla soft serve.

Wimbly Lu’s Waffles are known for their light and crispy texture. This is best accompanied with a scoop of recommended ice cream flavors like Earl Grey, Cookies & Cream, or Salted Caramel.
