Breakfast Popovers Recipe

This is a family favorite that I’ve been making for years! We love our breakfast recipes around here and this easy breakfast popovers recipe is one of our all time favorites.

Super easy, as you’ll see, this is a great recipe for kids just learning their way round the kitchen. These popovers are super easy and pretty tough to mess up because they are THAT simple.

My family calls them Easy Breakfast Popovers.

They are easy from start to finish, quick, affordable and most of all … delicious!

Once you get this recipe down, you can whip them up from start to finish in around 20 minutes. This is what makes them my go-to for a quick and delicious breakfast option!

I literally blend them up in the mixer and pour them into muffin tins – no need for a special popover pan – pop them into a hot oven and wait 9-12 minutes (until the tops are a deep golden brown – and they are done! One of my favorite easy recipes, always a success! I like to keep everything that I need to make these on my grocery ingredient checklist because they really are my go-to breakfast item if I need something quick.

You can also hand mix them with a wire whisk but just make sure to whisk eggs really well because the airier they are, the better they are and the higher they rise.

As you will discover, these also tend to rise differently depending on your location, the weather and other variables. I love airy popovers so I’m always hoping for the impressive heights that perfect popovers can get, although they don’t always raise the way you want. Sometimes you’ll get large popovers and sometimes you’ll get small popovers.

But, regardless of how they look, they are always delicious. In other words, it’s likely you won’t have any leftovers with these. We never do because everyone loves them so much!

Ingredients for making breakfast popovers

Flour

Eggs (The more eggs, the denser the popover, and sometimes I remove a couple yolks but prefer whole eggs)

Whole milk (1% or 2% milk will work as well)

Melted butter

Vanilla

Sugar

Popover topping ideas: maple syrup, berries, bananas, powdered sugar, peaches – the ideas are endless but those are some of our favorite toppings. I love that this recipe calls for simple ingredients and we tend to top this classic popover recipe with simple toppings. I have made them into cheese popovers (just use the basic recipe and add cheese right before they come out of the oven) and that is another great option for making these popovers.

You’ll also need a standard muffin tin (or a 6-cup popover pan or a 12-cup pop-over pan) but as I mentioned, regular muffin tins work just fine. Sometimes I will set my muffin tin on a baking sheet, but that’s not necessary either.

How to make Popovers

Preheat the oven to 450F.

Blend all ingredients in a blender or mix by hand in a large bowl. (there will be small lumps)

Spray muffin tins with Pam cooking spray. (even if you have a nonstick popover pan) Fill muffin tins 1/2 way with popover batter. Bake popovers in the oven for about 9 to 12 minutes on middle rack (watch them close, because they can start to darken quickly past 9 min).

I like the tops to get a little crispy, so I’ll usually move them to the top rack for the last minute or so. If you like crispy sides, then let them go a little longer.

I either serve them right from the popover cups / popover tin or put them on a wire rack. You want to serve them right away though, so no need to let them cool. I’d get the toppings on them and start serving them right away!

Now that your popovers are done, adding the toppings is the very best part!

We love egg recipes around here and this easy to make popover recipe is actually one of the first recipes that my kids learned to make on their own and let me tell you, it’s pretty awesome to have a tweenager helping you in the kitchen.

Quite often we will double this recipe for leftover popovers. Store them in an airtight container and you can have sweet popovers for breakfast (or a snack) the next day! I actually love snacking on these so I’m never sad if we have leftovers, they are so yummy! They actually remind me of cream puffs (without the cream filling) just to good!
