H.E.L.L.O Hot Chocolate!

Ok so the time has come…temperatures have fallen, well at least in Wisconsin they have, and we even had our first snowfall last week!!

And ya know what…the first snow fall you just HAVE to have hot cocoa right?

Have you ever pulled out one of the packaged hot chocolate mixes at the supermarket before and checked out the ingredients?

You know, the ones in a box at the supermarket, the processed kinds! Prepare yourself, there are so many questionable ingredients that your head will start spinning!

So I set out to make my own homemade organic hot cocoa mix recipe and I was shocked at how easy it was to make! For real!

Meet My Family

We have a lot of new faces here, so I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to Whole Lifestyle Nutrition. We are so glad you are here!

I thought I’d take a moment to introduce you to my family. Yah, that is the love of my life, Dave. Handsome isn’t he? 😀

We have 3 beautiful girls that amaze me every day. I am so blessed to have them in my life. I have a set of twins (Aubree is on the left and Brynn is on the far right) and then Kenna is my oldest.

Yah, and here I am with my babies…I know, they aren’t babies, but to me they sure are. They still call me mama. I absolutely LOVE that and hope they always continue calling me that.

Our family absolutely loves sledding and snowboarding! We have some pretty incredible sledding parks here in Wisconsin. We sure do get a lot of snow up here, and pretty much stay snowed in for close to 6 months so we embrace the winter weather.

Enjoying A Delicious Cup of Hot Cocoa

Adding Marshmallows To Your Cocoa

My girls absolutely LOVE marshmallows in their cocoa, and so do I! But here is the thing…there are some pretty nasty marshmallows out there, so keep and eye out for marshmallows that are made with quality ingredients.

We actually buy ours from a local health food store, but my favorite brand when I can’t make it to the local store is Organic Vanilla Marshmallows. They are organic and made with GMO-free ingredients.

I understand that a cup of cocoa is a treat, and so do my girls. I am okay if they want to splurge with a cup of cocoa that has sugar iamn it and topped with velvety marshmallows. It is a treat you all, it is okay to splurge and enjoy!

Here is an incredible recipethat shows you how easy it is to make your own quality marshmallows. Oh and your kids will love making these little gems too!

A Great Holiday Gift {Especially For Teachers}!

With 3 girls in school, I am always looking for a creative teacher’s gift that is from the heart and is reasonable, easy and affordable to make!

Check out that adorable cup in the picture below! I got that at Michaels for $2.95. While you’re there grab some cute ribbon to tie on the mason jar, or better yet, you can get some cute little bags to add the cocoa mix in.

A quick and easy way to add flavor to your hot chocolate is by adding a splash of your favorite extract. Coconut and almond extracts lend hot chocolate an Almond Joy-like taste, while vanilla adds dimension to the chocolate flavor. Peppermint extract instantly gives the drink a holiday flair.

How long does homemade hot cocoa mix last? ›

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4-6 months. To make hot chocolate from the mix, add 4-6 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix to a mug and fill the rest of the way with about 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Hot water works fine, but the hot chocolate won't be as creamy and rich.

The source of the chocolate flavour is different. Hot Chocolate is made using solid chocolate melted in warm milk or cream. Hot Cocoa, however, is made from a powdered base of cocoa with added sugar and dissolved in hot water or hot milk.

What is the best cocoa powder to make hot chocolate? ›

Unsweetened cocoa powder: a high-quality cocoa powder or cacao powder is essential. I highly recommend using Ghirardelli's 100% cocoa. I think it has the best flavor for hot chocolate (and trust me, I've tried quite a few!)

What is the best chocolate for hot cocoa? ›

*Choose the best quality chocolate you can, as the flavor really carries the drink. I love Guittard for a splurge, Ghirardelli, or Godiva, but the Trader Joe's Pound Plus 72% bar is quite good too. I do not recommend chocolate chips, as they contain stabilizers and do not melt as well.

Is hot cocoa better with water or milk? ›

Although hot chocolate doesn't necessarily need an even more creamy, decadent taste, using milk certainly enriches the experience. We suspect that milk adds a creamier taste than water alone, and when combined with the notes of chocolate, the smooth undertones of the milk simply add a delicious backdrop.

How do you make 100% cocoa taste good? ›

Fruit and 100% Dark Chocolate Pairings

Because 100 percent dark chocolate can be bitter, it pairs best with fruits that are extra sweet. It helps neutralize very sweet fruits. Dark chocolate also pairs well with the sourness of passion fruit and the tanginess of citrus.

Can I use water instead of milk with hot cocoa mix? ›

All you need to make hot chocolate at home is cocoa powder, sugar, and milk or water.

Is it OK to use expired hot cocoa mix? ›

If the hot chocolate powder has been stored in a cool, dry place and kept well-sealed, it is likely to last longer past its 'best before' date without spoiling. If in doubt, it's always safest to err on the side of caution and avoid consuming the product.

Why do you put cornstarch in hot chocolate mix? ›

Cornstarch prevents caking and also thickens the milk without adversely affecting flavor.

What can you add to hot cocoa mix? ›

Sweet add-ins include marshmallows, whipped cream, caramel, flavored spreads, and maple syrup. To transform cocoa into a co*cktail, add flavored liqueurs or traditional spirits. Other unique ways to liven up hot chocolate include adding coffee, spices, and extracts.

What kind of milk do you use for hot chocolate? ›

The best type of milk for making hot chocolate is whole milk. This is because the higher fat content in whole milk creates a creamier and richer hot chocolate. However, if you are looking for a healthier option, almond milk or oat milk can also work well as they add a subtle nutty or oaty flavor to the hot chocolate.

Is drinking hot chocolate good for you? ›

Regular, moderate consumption of cocoa-rich hot chocolate can support cardiovascular health by improving blood flow, reducing blood pressure, and decreasing levels of 'bad' LDL cholesterol. However, choosing high-quality cocoa, like the ones we use in our creations, is vital to reap the optimum benefits.

Which is healthier cocoa or hot chocolate? ›

Warming chocolate drinks are undoubtedly one of winter's greatest pleasures, but if you're drinking a highly processed hot chocolate, you simply aren't reaping the same health benefits as you could be with cacao. Not only is cacao more satisfying and fulfilling, it's also far better for you and the planet!
